The 1996-98 Executive Board of the Council on Library/Media
Technicians (COLT) met on February 13, 1997, in Washington, D.C.,
with President Kent Slade presiding.  COLT, the national
organization for advancement of library support staff, is an
affiliate of the American Library Association.  COLT fosters
recognition and respect for support staff as it addresses issues
such as continuing education and networking, national standards
for certification, improved communication between and among
library staff of all levels, and cooperation with other
organizations with similar goals.
 
Complete minutes of the Board meeting will be available at the
General Business meeting on June 17, 1997 during the Annual
Conference.  Here are a few of the highlights to help you plan
for the future.
 
1997 ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN SAN FRANCISCO
The 30th conference of COLT will be held June 25-28, 1997, in San
Francisco, CA, at the Sheraton at Fisherman's Wharf.  4-D Power
Networking for Library Paraprofessionals:  How to Get Ahead
Without Stepping on Too Many Toes is the conference theme.
 
Author Pat Wagner is the keynote speaker, and librarian Robert
Skapura is the banquet speaker.  A wide variety of topics will be
covered in conference sessions: Netiquette, Job Market, TQM and
Meeting Management, Networking, Blurring Roles (MLS/Support
Staff), Professionalism, Afraid of Change?, Storytelling, and
Special Collections.
 
Beyond the conference you may visit your choices from a number of
San Francisco area tours and a Broadway show.  And of course,
you'll want to see the exhibits at the ALA Annual Conference,
June 26-July 3.

WORKSHOP PLANNER READY FOR PRINTING
_Your One-Stop Guide for Planning a Workshop_, by Joy Wanden and
edited by Linda Owen, will be available by the annual conference
in June.  It will cost under $10, but anyone holding a training
workshop, especially a library workshop, will find it a priceless
aid in planning and evaluating everything that goes into making a
workshop successful.
 
Watch for order forms in Library Mosaics and on LIBSUP-L.
 
SOME COLT REGIONAL CHANGES
The Southeast Regional Director, Barbara Lockley, submitted her
resignation to the Board.  The COLT Board is very pleased that
Linda Putnam of Strozier Library at Florida State University has
just recently accepted appointment to this directorship.
 
The Northwest Region, which has been without a director, was
disbanded and its states reassigned to the Central Region under
Margaret Barron and to the renamed Southwest-Northwest Region
under Regional Director Rosie Lewis.
 
FALL 1997 NORTHEAST REGIONAL CONFERENCE PLANS
Dorothy Morgan, Northeast Regional Director, announced a day-long
Regional Conference, EXPANDING HORIZONS.  It will be held on
Sept. 19, 1997, in the Holiday Inn@Carrier Circle, Syracuse, NY.
It will feature programs on communication in the workplace and
employer/employee relations.  There will also be a panel
discussing how changes in technology are affecting various
library workers in different kinds of libraries.
 
Watch for announcements and registration details for this
exciting conference.
 
1998 ANNUAL CONFERENCE PLANS PROGRESS
Mim Gaines, Vice President/President Elect, reported that the
Washington Marriott in Georgetown is the site of the COLT Annual
Conference in June, 1998.  Program plans are underway.  With the
Mid-winter Conference as a preview, this annual conference
promises to be great.
