Subject: Associates -- July 2004 -- Website Review -- Brooks

Hi, Wendee - the link [for Interactive Archive: Wayback Machine] does not seem to work on this page [Michael Brooks' website review of *A Time Machine for Web Pages* in Associates (2004 July, v.11, no.1) at <http://associates.ucr.edu/wrbro704.htm>]. Could you supply?

Thanks,
Angie

[Editor: "I'm sorry you couldn't access the site of 'Interactive Archive: Wayback Machine?' The address for what is called "Internet Archive: Wayback Machine" is at http://www.archive.org/web/web.php. I unfortunately neglected to list the web link address as well as the name! I'll go ahead and revise the web page right away. The July 2004 email subscribers will have problems if they receive their email in plain text rather than with styled text (HTML). Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I will now double-check that all sites mentioned in articles will have the name and 'http://' addresses listed for the future Associates issues."]

Subject: list ASSOCIATES: Mail Error Notification

ASSOCIATES -- July 2004 -- ... has been detected as SPAM by our e-mail security software. It has not been delivered to the intended recipient.

[Editor: Many of our email systems are employing severe restrictions on incoming email to detect SPAM and occasionally classify genuine emails incorrectly. When I send out the Associates issue, for both email version or web notification, I receive at least five "bounces" that are returned undelivered to me that are tagged as SPAM. I try to contact the subscriber directly and we work together to allow the subscriber's email system to accept email from "owner-associates@listproc.UCR.EDU." I have recently changed to Outlook for email. Apparently, if I send an email in HTML format, the user will receive both a plain text version and an html version. If the receiver's email client allows HTML view, then they will see the HTML version. If not, they will see the text version. I hope.]

Subject: Electronic journal assignment

Dear Editor,

I am a Library and Information Science graduate student of the University of the Philippines. I would like to request for the name of your publisher in line with my assignment on paper or electronic journals. My assignment's objective is to help LIS students become more acquainted with the different professional journals and for us to evaluate them in a systematic way that will broaden and deepen our understanding of the field. I found your electronic journal interesting and decided to research on it. We were provided a list of guidelines to help us in this assignment. I have answered most of them, but I hope that you can help me with a few more which I may have missed from your website. These are:

1. Are the articles included in the journals referred?

2. Are books reviewed? If so, what kind, and how far after the publication date of the book does the review appear? Who are the reviewers?

I would be most grateful for any information you can give me.

Thank you,
Edilisa Marie Gonzales

[Editor: I mentioned to Ms. Gonzales that anyone may submit an article for consideration, and the language must be English. Sylvia Skene is our "Book and Video Review" editor. She selects any book or video she prefers and writes her own views. Occasionally, an author or publisher will contact me directly wishing a review in Associates. The book must be current, library-related, and be sent to us without cost. I also thought Associates subscribers would be interested about experiences in libraries and library school in the Philippines, and encouraged Ms. Gonzales to write an article.]

Subject: Permission to reprint *Gripping the Handrails: Is "Walking the Walk" slippery now?*

Hello Wendee,

I would like to reprint this article in an upcoming issue of Library Mosaics and Charlie Fox would like your okay to do that. Would you consider granting this?

Thanks,
Jennifer

[Editor: Thank you, Jennifer, for asking permission to reprint your article from Associates (2004, July, vol. 11, no. 1), titled *Gripping the Handrails: Is "Walking the Walk" Slippery Now?* <http://associates.ucr.edu/fkut704.htm>. Associates is pleased to grant permission to reprint articles with the approval of the author and with the stipulation that Associates is cited.]

Subject: Associates' BUBL Archive Links

Hi Wendee.

I enjoy receiving Associates. I have been downloading earlier issues for my collection. Today I went to the site and clicked on the BUBL link and then clicked on volume 6 no. 2 as this is the one I wanted to print off. I clicked on the editorial link and I got taken to the University of Kansas site. There was a note that this URL could not be found. I clicked on v. 6 no. 3 and everything was fine. Can you check to see what is going on with v. 6 no. 2.

Thank you.
Lynda.

[Editor: My thanks to Lynda for telling me about the missing BUBL links. I found that some of the BUBL archives (back issues) with links to the University of Kansas are no longer active. Fortunately, I had a copy of the back issues that I requested from BUBL several years ago for Vol. 1, No. 1, 1994 through Vol. 7, No. 1, 2000 and we were able to load these back issues on the server at the University of California, Riverside. The Associates archives page is at http://associates.ucr.edu/archives.htm]

Subject: Associates Subscription and "Error Condition Re: Invalid request"

HELP!
What did I do wrong? How do I subscribe? … What's the difference between the two types of subscriptions?

Rose-Emma

[Editor: To subscribe or unsubscribe, go to the Associates website at http://associates.ucr.edu/subscribe.htm. Unfortunately, the "listproc" is notorious for being extremely particular and literal about names and addresses. If anyone has trouble subscribing or unsubscribing, please write directly to me at rivwe@ucr.edu. I will be glad to help.

The difference between email and web Associates:

Associates is available via email. For listserv subscription purposes, this is called "Associates." All the columns, features, calendar, editorial stuff, etc., are sent to these subscribers, resulting in about 15-20 separate emails. This is our most popular subscription.

Associates has a webpage at www.associates.ucr.edu. For listserv subscription purposes, this is called "Associatesweb." I send an announcement to these subscribers that the new issue is available on the web. You would only receive one email.]

[Editor: The July 2004 issue of Associates was a celebration of our 10th year of publication and most of the articles were written by contributors who wrote for the early issues of Associates. I thought I would share a few of the congratulatory letters sent to me about the Associates 10th Anniversary issue.]

Once again you outdid yourself--the latest issue is wonderful--truly. It's difficult for me to believe how tentative we all were at the beginning ... at that point we were wondering if anyone would read it. Somebody joked that we might have to worry about Y2K ... but I don't think we figured we'd last that long!

Thanks so much for all your efforts ... they really show-- even more than usual-- in this very special edition!

Please accept this virtual hug () and pat on the back /|

Bob

Thanks for letting me participate, Wendee. It was nice to see stories from Janet and Kendall again, as I used to work with them at the University of Kansas, and seeing what they are doing now. The issue looks great, and I wish you success in the future with the journal. Brad

... and a Hearty ARGH to ye, missy!

I've been off work for a couple of days; The Pirates gigged late Thursday night and so I decided to make a long weekend of it. We recorded our first cd on Father's Day, and we are planning on having it reproduced within the next couple of weeks.

I checked out the issue this morning and WHAT FUN! Mega-props to you, Wendee, it's a fun ride. You better believe that I'll promote this one.

May your Seas Be Not Too Calm,
The Pirate Queen
