[Editor: When Associates first began publication in 1994, the journal was issued as email--web sites were not commonplace then. Now, subscribers have a choice of receiving either the email version OR notification that the newest web version is available. About half of Associates subscribers wish to receive the email version. I have indicated on the subscription page to Associates that subscribers to ASSOCIATES will receive the entire, full-text contents of the new issue, resulting in approximately 20 SEPARATE EMAILS sent directly to you on the day of publication. Who is on the board of Associates? I have always felt one could say it like it is [in Associates] What I am wondering, is there any censorship--which is different than editing?

The Editorial Board is comprised of 5 members: Katie Kintner; Bessie Mayes; Sylvia Skene, Susan Ryan; Joy Wanden (see full details at the Associates webpage at: http://associates.ucr.edu/705editor.htm) The Editorial Board is an advisory group that helps determine the overall scope, direction, and policies of the publication. Associates is totally unaffiliated with ANY organization or association. My campus has given me free access to a website and listservs. The library allows me some work time to answer emails and get the issue out, etc. I'm not held accountable in any way to the library or university for the contents of Associates. If an article is a personal attack on a specific individual--well, that's not acceptable. If it's about librarian vs. library assistant--we have those articles all the time. I am the final judge on what is published. I have never run into any topic that was unacceptable. I'm rather liberal and open in my views on what's publishable--fiction, articles on any library topic, even unfavorable reviews. If I felt concern about the contents of the article, I would probably pick up the phone and call the author and we would talk about it. Simple as that. If it became a policy decision, then I would get the Editorial Board involved.]
