Soaring to Excellence
College of DuPage

Between February and June of 1995, over 10,000 library assistants
received skill training through an innovative distance education
project called Soaring to Excellence, a series of national
teleconferences for library paraprofessionals. Produced by
College of DuPage, in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and transmitted by
satellite to over 400 sites across North America, Soaring to
Excellence has proven to be a very effective and efficient way
to train thousands of library employees. Through real-time
electronic feedback, Internet discussion groups, and local
networking opportunities, the teleconferences are providing
library paraprofessionals with direct access to quality training
and skills improvement, and the basis for a state and nationwide
sense of community.

We are happy to announce the continuation of the series, and
invite you to join us for a second year of teleconferences. We
encourage you to sponsor Soaring to Excellence and use the
broadcasts as the keystone for an inservice and training program
for paraprofessionals in your library.

                      The Teleconferences:

Say Internet, and They Will Come
                         with Bill Erbes

As media hype reaches fever pitch, libraries of all types are
assuming the responsibility of providing internet access to their
patrons. This session will offer a practical, common-sense
approach to taking advantage of the lure of the internet. Where
do I as an LTA fit into the internet picture? What do I really
need to know? Where can I get understandable help? How can I
deal with arrogant computer-heads and know-it-all colleagues?
How much of the hype is really true? What works? What doesn't?
The overall emphasis of this session will be to provide specific,
useable information to arm the LTA for the internet onslaught.

                    Successful Teambuilding:
Managing to Survive the Challenging 90's
                    with Arlene Farber Sirkin

Most library staff recognize that they need to work smarter, not
harder. But how do you do it? By using teambuilding you can
maximize your efforts. This practical session will include: What
helps/hinders teams, how to select team members, what are the key
functions to help the team fulfill its task, and what are five
common stumbling blocks to maximizing your success?

Tools of Our Trade, Part II:
                  Brand Names in Reference Work
                         with Linda Dobb

Emphasizing the key tools that can help answer the most commonly
asked questions at any information desk, this session will focus
on the major tools used in business, literature and legal
reference work. Library assistants from every type of library --
school, academic, public, or special -- will find something of
use as they are introduced or reintroduced to the major print and
online resources that can help answer questions quickly or point
patrons in the right direction for further research.

                 Support Staff: Invisible People
                        with Ed Martinez

Library assistants are the "invisible" staff who perform vital
functions in every library. This program will provide an
overview of library personnel, including the birth of
"professionalism" and "paraprofessionalism," and demonstrate the
"invisible" treatment that support staff has so often
experienced. The program will then provide creativity exercises
and examples to give visibility to staff, so that through this
increased visibility support staff can be recognized for their
contributions, and this recognition will result in better work
for both the individual and the library.

                     Coping at the Workplace
                    with Debra Wilcox Johnson

The pace in the library is a hectic one, and sometimes we feel
out of control of work and environment. This session explores
two areas that can influence this feeling: time management and
stress. What is time management and how can an individual begin
to "control" time? How does stress relate to our ability
to do good work? Practical suggestions for managing time and
stress will be given, and self-assessment exercises will be
provided.

                  A Mosaic of Library Issues:
                      Where Do You Fit In?
                        with Linda Slusar

As a facilitated panel discussion, this program will serve to
encapsulate the series and address the future of library
assistants as well as the future of the profession of
librarianship. Participants will be local -- at College of
DuPage, and remote -- at participating sites across the country.
Library assistants will have the opportunity to address questions
such as: Where do we go from here? How can we continue to
foster the emerging sense of community among library support
staff? What new tools and ideas do we need in order to
provide vital services to our patrons in the 21st century? Join
us in a national dialogue.
