ALA webcast to explore how salaries affect library recruitment
(CHICAGO) Get your (virtual) seats now for the program that will provide more than anecdotal evidence of the connection between salaries and recruitment. The American Library Association (ALA) and the American Library Association-Allied Professional Association (ALA-APA) will mark National Library Workers Day with an April 12, 2005, live interactive webcast featuring research, resources and real-world examples of how salaries impact library recruitment activities. The program, called "Making the Connection: How Salaries Affect Recruitment in Libraries," will take place from noon to 1 p.m. EST.
ALA President Carol Brey-Casiano will introduce the program and give a "state of the industry" analysis of how the library world is changing in relation to the economy and the population. The groundbreaking film, "Working @ Your Library: For Love or Money?" will be shown. Library workers who have successfully waged a salary and/or status improvement campaign will share their stories. Finally, Em Claire Knowles, Assistant Dean at Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science, will present research that illuminates the ties between salaries and recruitment.
This program will provide best practices to help library staff see and validate the connection between salaries and recruitment and the importance of addressing these issues within the same conversations as the profession strives to hire and retain the best employees. Audience members also will be able to ask questions to the presenters.

Libraries also are encouraged to celebrate National Library Workers Day on April 12, 2005. The theme for National Library Workers Day is "Libraries Work Because We Do," which focuses on how library services depend on the important work done by each library staff member and department. Libraries may customize the first slogan by adding the library's name to the beginning, e.g., Goodpay Public Library Works Because We Do.
Libraries also are invited to use the slogan "We work @ your library(" to tie into ALA's Campaign for America's Libraries. Customizable tools and materials to help libraries promote National Library Workers Day are available on the ALA-APA Web site at http://www.ala-apa.org/about/nlwd.html. Buttons proclaiming "Libraries Work Because We Do," are available for $5 each from the ALA-APA Web site.
