Australian 8th National Library Technicians Conference  Darwin,
Australia from 12-14 July 1995.
 
The conference is entitled Techs at the Top and the theme is
Challenges and Changes Around the World.  It will look at the
challenges facing library technicians in the workforce, the changes
in technology and explore the international arena, muticulturalism,
library technicians from other countries, cross-cultural aspects,
overcoming distance and generally bringing people together.

Library and Information Services in Astronomy II (LISA II)
European Southern Observatory, Garching, Germany
 
The IAU Colloquium No. 110, Library and Information Services in
Astronomy (LISA), was held in Washington, D.C. on July 28-August
1, 1988. The aims of LISA-II, an IAU Technical Workshop, are
twofold: (1) to provide the opportunity for librarians of
astronomical observatories and institutes to meet to discuss
common problems, and ways of stimulating greater cooperation
between libraries and their services; and (2) to raise discussion
about, and to throw light on, the interface areas between
astronomical libraries and the wide range of online and other
astronomical computer-based services which are becoming
ever more widespread.
 
Among topics to be covered are:
    -   Astronomical information - changing technologies.
    -   Impact of electronic publishing on the library.
    -   Use of online databases - commercial and public domain.
    -   Mastering the information flood - abstracting and
        indexing.
    -   Future perspectives - major research initiatives.
 
The program envisaged will consist of one day of tutorials and
hands-on training sessions; followed by two days of invited and
contributed presentations.
 
Hotel reservations deadline: 15 March 1995.

- Planned tutorials and demonstrations (example worksheets to be
  provided), Wednesday May 10, starting at 09:00: The Internet - an
  overview; SIMBAD, NED; ADS; STARCAT; Mosaic and other Web
  browsers; Secondary information services.
- Planned 'Birds of a Feather' session (informal meeting) on
  "Digitalization of the Library", Management of remote libraries
  etc.
- Planned invited presentations to include the following topics:
  Theme talk  "Changing role of librarians/Managing new
  technologies in libraries"; Information retrieval - new
  developments; Searching, indexing, information sifting and
  filtering; Future perspectives for electronic publishing and
  their impact on libraries; Astronomical databases; Panel
  discussion with librarians from developing countries.
- Contributed presentations were sought on topics such as the
  following: Thesauri; other Internet-related developments;
  integrating library resources and external on-line resources;
  integrating library meta-data and external meta-data (OPACs
  etc.); Z39.50, publishers' perspectives.
- Planned social activities include: Reception in ESO, evening of
  Thursday May 11; Post-conference tour (Munich sightseeing,
  including Nymphenburg Palace), Saturday May 13.

Kristy Atwood, a senior research assistant for Dr. Jose'-Marie
Griffiths at the UT School of Information Sciences, will discuss

opportunities available with a degree.  She will also discuss the
school's plans for distance learning programs throughout the
state.

"Annual Meeting of the Paraprofessional Roundtable featuring
Paulette Feld From the Wisconsin Library Association's Support
Staff Section" Until recently, support staffs had little
opportunity to share experiences with their colleagues at other
libraries and locations.  That has all changed with support staff
across the country getting involved in local, state, and national
organizations.  There are many benefits to becoming involved in
these organizations including those that can improve performance
and attitude on the job.  This presentation will look at where we
have come as support staff and where we want to be in the future.
Immediately after our speaker, we will have our annual business
meeting.
