The Michigan Library Association will  welcome library staff to
"Support Staff and Paraprofessionals . . . An essential Part of
the Team" conference on March 24, 1997.  The day-long event,
designed specially for the interests and needs of non-MLS library
staffers, will feature Kathleen Weibel of the Chicago Public
Library.  An energizing morning session will get the expected
200 attendees fully involved in her program, "I work in a
Library, But I'm not a Librarian."  Newly relocated to the
Cuyahoga Co. Library System in Ohio, Jim McPeak will address the
sometime-challenges we all face when working with others during
lunch with his program, "You People are Driving Me Crazy !"
Conference attendees will design their own afternoons, having
4 breakout programs to select from in 2 concurrent sessions. The
day concludes with MLA President, Beverly Papai, addressing
"Making Yourself an Integral Part of the Library Team."  Last
year's spring conference drew 180 individuals and we're hoping to
top that number at this year's first support staff program.

Enhancing Quality Staff In Changing Times
 
The 5th Annual Symposium for library paraprofessionals and
support staff, will be held  at the Radisson  Hotel Metrodome,
University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus. This annual event is
created by library staff and sponsored by the University of
Minnesota Libraries.  This year, the MN Library Association
Support Staff & Paraprofessional Interest Section joined
the program planning group, adding a valuable perspective from
the state association.
 
EQS provides a forum for staff from all types of libraries to
share ideas and experiences with peers, gain relevant continuing
education, and work toward personal well-being. The 30+ programs
this year will emphasize the opportunities present in our work as
we move into the 21st century and the many paths that are
available for personal and professional development.
 
Concurrent sessions include: Working in the 21st Century;
Reference Training with MORE; Digital Media and Learning;
Netscape; Student Staff Training; Access Minnesota Project; After
Diversification--Then What?; Copyright/Copywrong; Message
Therapy; TechnoStress; Job Searching on the Internet; Having Fun
at Work; Conflict Friendly in a Changing Environment;
Adaptive Technologies; Presentation Skills; Literacy and Beyond;
Ergonomics and Wellness; Creating a Meaningful Worklife;
Descriptive Cataloging with MOTSE; and more.
 
Theatre At Work will keynote the symposium with an exceptional
production on Tuesday, May 20.
 
The opening reception, hosted by the Friends of the University
Library, will be from 4:30 to 7:30 on Monday, May 19, at the
University Campus Club.  The University Gospel Choir and a jazz
combo will provide a warm and spirited welcome to EQS 1997!

fee for non-University of MN Libraries participants is $45,

This is the sixth annual conference designed by and for library
paraprofessionals and support staff in Minnesota.
 
On August 7th the conference will be held at the University of
St. Thomas and the sessions on August 8th will be held at the
College of St.Catherine, both in St. Paul, Minnesota. The
projected cost of the conference will be $75.00 for both days, or
$40.00 for a single day.

of the 4th Annual Support Staff/Paraprofessional Conference,
sponsored by the Support Staff/Paraprofessional Council of the
Missouri Library Association.
 
The keynote speaker will be Coach Larry Smith of the Mizzou
Tigers.  The keynote presenter is Elliott Ring, author of

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities" .
 
The Paraprofessional Section recognizes the importance of support
staff to Nebraska's libraries and to the citizens who depend on
these libraries.  The conference seeks to add to the education
and experience of library paraprofessionals, encourage them to
become more involved in their libraries, state organizations and

The theme of this year's NYSLAA conference is, "Library
Assistants...Hand-in-hand, Reaching New Horizons"  This year's
conference is hosted by the Library Assistants Advisory Committee
of the South Central Research Library Council, and library
assistants throughout the South Central New York region are
serving on the conference planning committee.
 
During the three days of the conference, there will be
opportunities to attend workshops, a roundtable luncheon, the
annual NYSLAA open forum and business meeting, as well as tours
of Ithaca area waterfalls and Cornell University.  The keynote
speaker is Ed Gillen, a former member of NYSLAA's Executive
Council and an advocate for library assistants nationwide,
currently with the New York State Education Department Office of
Human Resources Management; he will speak of "New Horizons, New
Challenges".  There will be an evening of rock and roll from the
50's at Lakewatch, overlooking beautiful Cayuga Lake.

communication in the workplace.  Betsy Elkins, Director of Moon
Library at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry
will present a program on employer/employee relations.
The balance of the one day program will consist of a panel
discussion including a question/answer period.  We are calling
the panel segment "Common and Uncommon Threads:  Technology,
Libraries, and Library Assistants".  Each panelist will have
10-15 minutes to talk about how library automation and
information technologies are affecting library assistants in
their type of library:  the ups, downs, stresses, changes, and
opportunities.  There will be 4 panelists, representing academic,
public, school, and special libraries.
 
The day will be exciting. The conference is a perfect opportunity
to network. It is also a chance for library staff  to "expand
their horizons".
