PETITION

Signatures are being gathered that will be presented to Dr. John
Berry, Editor of _Library Journal_, and his staff. Each year
_Library Journal_ gives a Librarian of the Year Award. Carolyn Tate,
of the University of Richmond is spearheading this project, along with
concerned and committed paraprofessionals who feel that _Library
Journal_ should also give an annual award to recognize an outstanding
paraprofessional. Your support is needed to acheive the goal of an
annual Paraprofessional of the Year Award from _Library Journal_.

If you would like to participate, send an email to Carolyn Tate
at: ctate@richmond.edu To be counted, your message MUST include:

SUBJECT LINE: LJ Paraprofessional Award petition
MESSAGE TEXT: Your name, Dept/Position, Library, Address, Phone,
			Fax, Email address

"Please add my name to the petition to request that the editors
and staff of _Library Journal_ include the 'Other Librarians' by
creating an annual Paraprofessional of the Year Award."

Please share this information with your colleagues, both
paraprofessional and librarians, and ask them to participate.
The deadline for participating in this is March 31, 1998---so
please add your name to the petition today! We would like to
collect at least 3000 names on this list, and with the 2500+
subscribers to _ASSOCIATES_, that should not be a problem!

OALT/ABO

Greetings from OALT/ABO: Ontario Association of Library
Technicians/Association des Bibliotechniciens de l'Ontario

I would like to introduce myself. I am the PR Coordinator for
the Ontario Association of Library Technicians.

OALT/ABO have recently affiliated with COLT and I wanted to say
on behalf of the association, how delighted we are to be in this
relationship. Support staff relationships are very important and
networking amongst library associations is something that I personally
look forward to.

After the exciting conference last fall at the Northeast chapter
of COLT, I found out how important networking really was. Because of
this initial meeting, the affiliation wheels were put in motion. Both
Dorothy Morgan and Kent Slade were extremely enthusiastic and
motivated in this direction. I invited Dorothy to a meeting of
Halton/Peel (a chapter of OALT/ABO). After this meeting and further
discussions with our provincial executive, it was decided that
affiliation was the way to go. Our associations are so very similar
in goals, mission statements and values.

I want to invite all of you to come and visit our homepage and
see what OALT/ABO is all about. Our URL is: http://www.interlog.com/
~oaltabo. Also I hope to see all of you at the COLT conference in
Washington in June. Please feel free to drop by and say hello and
find out my association.

INTRODUCING FTP FROM THE LSSRC!

What does this mean? "FTP" is "File Transfer Protocol," and has
to do with how computers transfer files across the Internet. Today, in
this announcement, it means that the Library Support Staff Resource Center
has some files for you to download and use in your work. We are starting
with two offerings: my own Passport for Windows macrobook, and a student
training manual written by Terrie O'Neal at the University of Colorado
in Boulder.

These files are freely available and easily downloadable. Simply
follow the link to save the file to your computer, de-compress it, and
seehow it worksfor you. Thesetwo initial files can be found on the "Tools
for the job" page. (And speaking of PfW macros--this page also has a
link to Joel Hahn's Passport for Windowspage, where you can find his
macros and a wonderful set of lectures on how to program with the OCLC
Macro Language.)

I invite any of you who want to share something you have made for
your job, that can't be simply displayed on the Web (programs, forms,
documentation, exhibits, etc.), to contact Martha or me about making it
available via FTP. I knowyou have much you can share with your peers.
