The Illinois Association of College and Research Libraries  --

The Illinios Association of College and Research Libraries,  a 
chapter of the American Library Association and a forum of the 
Illinois Library Association, is sponsoring a two day conference.

Anthropologist Bonnie Nardi will open the conference with a keynote 
address on "Information Ecologies", a topic informed by her recent 
work with reference librarians.  Dr. Nardi is currently writing a 
book to be published by MIT press entitled:  Information Ecologies:  
Local Habitations for Technology and People, which contains a chapter
on librarians. 

Thursday afternoon will feature member presentations and contributed
papers, as well as a plenary session on the theme of "Issues in 
Establishing the Electronic Library".

The closing address by ACRL President Lee Hisle, "Survival of the 
Fittest: Values for the Electronic Information Age" will challenge us
not to lose sight of traditional values of  librarianship in our 
changing culture.
 
A catered lunch on Thursday, dinner excursions to area restaurants, 
and a social hour at the Holiday Inn Thursday evening promise plenty 
of relaxed networking opportunities.  Friday's business meeting will 
offer the added enjoyment of a catered breakfast.

Montana Library Paraprofessionals, an interest group of the Montana 
Library Association, will sponsor a workshop at the upcoming MLA 
Conference (April 29-May 2) in Missoula, MT.  The workshop
is entitled "Career Development for Non-MLS Library Employees" and 
will consist of five panelists addressing career development options 
for library employees not possessing a Master's degree in Library

The keynote speaker will be Steve Hanamura.  Mr. Hanamura is 
principal of Hanamura Consulting, a firm he founded in 1986 to help 
people work and live with one another to create a more productive 
environment.  Before starting Hanamura Consulting, he held human 
resource management jobs for US Bank, the Oregon Commission for the 
Blind, and Lane Community College.  An experienced and respected 
expert on workplace issues, Mr. Hanamura is a popular media
interview guest and keynote speaker at regional and national 
conferences.

Other conference sessions will include Survival Spanish, conflict
resolution, email privacy, and a look at the roles of 
paraprofessionals employed by jobbers.

The 4th Annual conference site will also offer something different.  
Rather than a formal lunch with a speaker, we'll have box lunches 
with a variety of informal entertainment and networking opportunities 
in the dining room, on the hotel grounds, and on the beach.  We 
encourage participants to dress casually to take advantage of the 
location.
