Subject: Associates calendar

Hi Wendee:

I just received the March 2006 issue and I was wondering if you were publishing your calendar of events article for this issue. I did not receive one nor was it in the table of contents.

Thank you,
Ruth

Editor (my reply):
In the November 2005 issue, I made an announcement: "With this issue, the "Calendar of Events" feature of
Associates has been replaced with links to library associations that lead to lists of more encompassing information about events than have been included in Associates. Please contact me if you wish to add websites to the "Events Link" page in Associates."

The decision was based on a two factors: 1) there was a fee to use EventKeeper and Associates has no funding source; 2) I asked the Board and the usual contributors if we should maintain a calendar. I was surprised that many said: What calendar? But all said to discontinue the calendar. So, the decision was made to end the Calendar.

There should have been an "Events Link" on the Table of Contents for the March 2006 issue and I missed adding it!

I have added the New York State Library Assistants' Association (NYSLAA) web site: nyslaa.org conference page to the Associates "Events Link" at http://associates.ucr.edu/events.htm

Subject: A favor from TechKNOW

I’d like to publish the following in the next issue of TechKNOW, an electronic publication from the Ohio Library Council’s Technical Services Division. You can view the current issue of TechKNOW at http://www.library.kent.edu/techknow.

I am basing the information in this little blurb for the issue on information on your webpage that I thought I should verify. Would you, or would someone be willing to respond?

Thanks! Margaret

Associates Library Support Staff Journal Loses its Subscription Database

This may be old news to some of you, but TechKNOW just found it out the hard way. Apparently The Associates, the electronic library support staff journal, lost its entire subscription database during February 2005. If you haven’t been receiving your issues three times a year, this may be why. The Associates is an excellent, informed publication, with an upbeat dedication to paraprofessionals in libraries. To view the current issue visit http://associates.ucr.edu/306toc1a.htm. To subscribe (or to re-subscribe) visit http://associates.ucr.edu/subscribe.htm.

Editor (my reply):
Certainly you may run your article on
Associates: The Electronic Library Support Staff Journal (http://associates.ucr.edu). It's been a year since the subscription list disaster and the word is still not getting out to everyone. We had over 3,000 subscribers in February 2005--we have slowly built up the subscribers to over 1,300 today.

TechKNOW is a fine publication. Thank you for your interest in Associates and my best to you on TechKNOW.

Wendee
Thanks for notification of the latest Associates - still warms my heart to see what is being done by others.

Wonder if you can help - I am trying to find listservs to join which cater primarily for those working in the circulation and short loan sections of the library - thought perhaps you could link me up. I am now focusing on digitisation of our short loans/reserves section.

Thanks
Jean

Editor (my reply):
Good to hear from you! I found the following lists that may interest you. All seem to be based in the U.S., though:

ILL-L@LISTSERV.ACNS.NWU.EDU Interlibrary Loan Discussion Group
CIRCPLUS@LISTSERV.BOISESTATE.EDU Circulation and Access Services
ARL-ERESERVE@CNI.ORG Association of Research Libraries Discussion of Electronic Reserve Services

You can do some searching at these links, but they seem a little out of date. The first site is where I found several lists:

http://www.aladin.wrlc.org/gsdl/cgi-bin/library?p=about&c=liblists
http://www.txla.org/pubs/tlj74_1/article5.html
http://www.docdel.net/Discussion_Lists.html

Good luck in your search for the right list to join!

Subject: Associates lists

Wendee,
Why can't I post to the list? Do I need to do something else to be able to?

Editor (my reply):
The Associates and AssociatesWeb listservs are used only to subscribe to
Associates. These listservs do not operate as typical listservs--such as Libsup-l--where you can post email and read what members have to say. That is, no posting is allowed from the listservs except from me, the editor. I only send out from the listserv 3 times a year in March, July, and November for the issue itself or the notification that the web page is updated. As an aside here, I receive an average of 10 spams/junk email a day directed to these listservs!

The name of your publication, "Associates," is meaningful to me because at the Portsmouth (VA) Public Library system, paraprofessionals with an undergrad degrees are designated "Library Associates." Those paraprofessionals who are not degreed are "Library Assistants." I'm not sure how the terms came about originally. I'm always interested in the job designations in different libraries and how they came about! Keep up the good work!

Editor (my reply):
The terms and uses of "Associates" and "Assistants" are interesting. I hadn't heard of that, actually. Thank you for your interest in
Associates!!

Subject: Fwd: Associates' article on Idea Plane

Hi Wendee,

I received (and responded to) this email today. Just thought you and the entire Associates family would like to know.

Frank, Little Bear

Editor: The following letter was received by Frank, Little Bear, in regard to his Bear Thoughts #2 column titled "Ranganathan’s Three Planes of Work" in Associates (2006, March, v. 12, no. 3) http://associates.ucr.edu/306cexn.htm

Dear Prof. Exner:

I came to Associates googling for a source that deals with idea plane <http://associates.ucr.edu/306cexn.htm>. Now, I have cited these three planes on my blog <http://akbani.blogspot.com/2006/04/visualizing-web-infostructure-i-cites.html>. Thank you Sir for connecting Ranganathan to a new generation of information professionals who know about facets (semantically speaking), but do not know faceted analysis, or whatever it means to be a father of library movement in a developmental perspective.

F.Y.I. I have been a student of his students [Gopinath and Neelameghan, in particular]; and my post-doctoral work (now published <http://www.geocities.com/drmtaher/publications.htm> is dedicated to a brand of librarians whom Ranganathan trained as bare-foot librarians.

You may kindly view my visual resume <http://www.geocities.com/drmtaher/mohamed_taher.htm> and my blog <http://akbani.blogspot.com/> .

Thank you for your time and attention.

Best,

Mohamed Taher

Subject: Associates, The Electronic Library Support Staff Journal - Cabell's Directories

Dear Editor Eyler,

The Associates journal has been recommended for inclusion in the 1st Edition of Cabell's Directory of Publishing Opportunities in Educational Technology and Library Science. Founded in 1978, Cabell Publishing, Inc. produces seven Directories of Publishing Opportunities to assist professors and researchers in finding journals which are compatible with the style and content of their manuscripts. We currently list over 2,500 journals in our Directories. Your listing in Cabell's will encourage individuals to submit the most innovative ideas and research results of current interest to your present and prospective subscribers. Also, administrators and accrediting committees use them to evaluate publication records. To have your journal included free of charge, complete and return, via email, the attached questionnaire and provide us with your manuscript guidelines and editorial comments. Currently we offer printed and electronic versions. Thank you in advance.

Editor: I submitted Associates to this directory. Any avenue that will "encourage individuals to submit the most innovative ideas and research results of current interest to your present and prospective subscribers" is welcomed!
