June 18-21, 1998
Boulder, Colorado
University of Colorado in Boulder
13TH ANNUAL NASIG CONFERENCE

CALL FOR PAPERS, WORKSHOPS, AND PRECONFERENCES
"Head in the Clouds, Feet on the Ground: Serials Vision and
Common Sense"

The North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG), an
organization that serves the interests of U.S., Canadian and
Mexican members of the serials information chain, will hold its
13th Annual Conference June 18-21, 1998, on the campus of the
University of Colorado in Boulder, one of the most beautiful
university campuses in the United States. NASIG's annual
conference provides a forum in which librarians, publishers,
vendors, educators, binders, systems developers, and other
serials specialists exchange views, present new ideas,
proactively seek solutions to common problems, and discuss
matters of current interest. The proceedings are published in
both print and electronic formats, with the electronic version
made available on NASIGWeb (http://nasig.ils.unc.edu).

In keeping with a venue in Colorado, a state of remarkable
topographic contrasts--plains, plateaus, and high mountains --
NASIG's Program Planning Committee invites proposals for plenary
papers and preconferences that deal with "big picture" aspects of
the theme, and which will help attendees scale new heights. We
are especially interested in papers or preconference ideas that
will examine both the visionary and practical aspects of the
digital serials information age. Sessions which report on
relevant research or which might inspire further research are
particularly welcome, as are proposals which address decision
making processes. Examples: *coping with the "digital shift"
*cataloging and organizing evolving forms of information
*Web access issues--technological, structural, cultural
*innovative partnerships for information management
*e-journals--access issues and their impact on user behavior
*preserving digital formats for future generations *changes in
library organizational structure *transactional commerce on the
Web *selection criteria for online information.

The Committee also invites workshop and preconference proposals
that will provide practical information to help serialists make
informed decisions on a day to day basis. Workshop leaders share
their experience in a collegial setting and facilitate related
discussion with those in attendance, often explaining how they
manage specific processes in their own settings. Examples:
   -new technologies/services/software packages/standards
   -managing in times of change
   -survey methods for serialists
-comparison of serials module features in the next generation
          of Integrated Library Systems
   -bibliometrics or statistics for serialists
   -licensing agreements for Web-based e-journals
-new models for serials publishing and their effects on the
          information chain

NASIG invites anyone in the information community to submit
proposals and suggest topics/speakers. The Program Planning
Committee reserves the right to combine, blend, or refocus
proposals to maximize program breadth and relevance to our
membership. As a result, not all presenters from proposals
submitted by teams may be invited to participate. Since
proposals are reviewed competitively, please include complete
information for maximum consideration: * name, address,
telephone/fax numbers, and e-address of the proposer(s)
* program title * a 200-300 word abstract clearly explaining the
proposal and, if appropriate, its relevance to the theme * a
prioritized preference for the proposal: plenary, workshop or
preconference.

Proposals should be submitted, via e-mail if possible, no later
than August 1, 1997 to Connie Foster, NASIG Secretary to receive
consideration. Send proposals to:

August 7 & 8, 1997
St. Paul, Minnesota
Branch Out 1997

This is the sixth annual conference designed by and for library
paraprofessionals and support staff.

On August 7th the conference will be held at the University of
St. Thomas and the sessions on August 8th will be held at the
College of St. Catherine, both in St. Paul, Minnesota. The cost
of the conference will be $85.00 for both days, or $50.00 for a
single day.

Our keynote speaker this year will be Robin Madsen, a
paraprofessional from St. Paul Public Library who is the current
President of AFSCME Local 1842. She will speak about the many
opportunities that library paraprofessional and support staff can
find to create new roles for themselves in their lives and
careers.

We are offering 10 hands-on computer sessions. The beginning,
intermediate and advanced sessions will offer participants a
chance to enhance their computer skills, from "Introduction to
the Internet" to "Library Web Page Design Issues". The
enrollment for these sessions is limited to 15-32 attendees,
depending on the computer lab they are in, so that we have no
more than two people per terminal.

There will also be a variety of other workshops and panel
discussions from a workshop on "Internet Literacy" to a panel
discussion on intellectual freedom we are calling "Goosebumps and
Beyond".

On Thursday evening, August 7, we will be sponsoring a bus trip
to the Mall of America. There are many wonderful restaurants and
entertainment spots there as well as a wide variety of shops to
visit. We provide the bus transportation and you decide how to
spend your 3-4 hours there.

--------------------------
October 1-3, 1997
Bloomington, Minnesota
Radisson South Hotel
Minnesota Library Association Annual Conference

This year's MLA Conference holds more interest than ever for
support staff. The Support Staff and Paraprofessional Interest
Section (SSPIN) is sponsoring eight programs. There will be
events all three days of the conference, but for staff that can
only attend one day, Thursday October 2 is chock full of
highlights.

Wednesday afternoon, we're sponsoring two presentations: At
1:45, there's "Remaining Human: Communicating in the Age of
Technology", a panel exploring the challenges of communicating in
an electronic world. What are we gaining and what are we losing?
And what can we do to make the work environment better? At 3:30,
staff members from St. Paul Public Library will present a
workshop on "Implementing Certification". These trainers,
paraprofessionals all, will discuss their experiences in making
this happen at their library.

Thursday begins at 7:00 am with SSPIN's annual business meeting,
an opportunity to look back over the accomplishments of the past
year and begin the process of planning for the year to come. At
10:30, SSPIN's current chair, Ginny Heinrich, and a past chair,
Kathie Martin, present an interactive workshop, "Networking in
the Nineties". "It's not what you know, it's who you know" is
more true than ever for the nanosecond nineties. Ginny and Kathie
will help you identify ideas for expanding your networking
sphere, both in person and in online situations.

After two years of lobbying, SSPIN has been granted sponsorship
of one of the conference keynote events. At the noon luncheon,
all participants will gather to hear Larry Oberg discuss "Support
Staff in a Transitional Age: Implications for the Profession".
He will explore the way he sees the library world developing and
speculate on what he thinks will be appropriate roles for both
support and librarians as we enter the new millennium.

Then at 1:45, four library directors will engage Larry Oberg in
a discussion of his provocative ideas. The focus of the
conversation will be on the impact of his ideas and how they
could be implemented in a variety of library settings.

At 3:30, SSPIN sponsors "Getting on the Same Page: The Effect of
TEAMS on Changing Staff Relationships". What effect does moving
our library organizations into teams have on the long-standing
relationships between different employee classifications? Staff
members from the University of Minnesota Libraries, Twin Cities
Campus, will speak from their perspective.

Our final presentation is a panel on Friday morning at 9:45
entitled "What If Only Support Staff?" Throughout the state,
there are support staff who are running academic, public and
special libraries without the direct supervision of a MLS-trained
librarian. A group of library workers in that position will
discuss the special skills they've developed to cope with this
situation.

Support staff are also encouraged to take advantage of the
seventy-plus other programs being offered.

New England

October 5-7,1997
Sturbridge, Mass.
Sturbridge Host Conference Center
New England Library Association Conference

The conference, is entitled "Beyond the Library Walls". There
are several programs of interest to support staff including
distance learning (LTA and MLS), advanced HTML, safety and
security, working with young adults, staff development;
discussion groups on ergonomics, year 2000 computer compliance,
and ILL vs. document delivery; and tours of Sturbridge Village,
banquets, and an exhibit hall with over 130 library vendors. A
varied and interesting program at which support staff are both
welcomed and encouraged to participate.

In addition to these programs, Larry Oberg reflects upon his own
early experiences as a library assistant in California, and upon
the new opportunities for support staff that have been created
since then. He will also discuss the new roles that library
support staff are assuming and speculate upon what they will be
doing in the library of tomorrow. He will conclude by outlining
what support staff will need to be successful in their new roles.
