Connecticut Library Association Endorses LTA Competencies

The Connecticut Library Association Support Staff (C.L.A.S.S.) section has recently finished compiling a list of Library Technical Assistants Competencies. This was
accomplished by a task force of five C.L.A.S.S. members who each took a section of competencies and worked on them, starting from a base of existing competencies gleaned from various agencies across the country. This project was started in January 2001 and completed in August 2001. The Connecticut Library Association Executive Board endorsed the competencies on August 16, 2001.

The purpose of producing these competencies was to aid the statewide Continuing Education Committee in targeting workshops most efficiently towards the needs of support staff. Also, C.L.A.S.S. hopes these competencies will prove useful for compiling paraprofessional job descriptions, assigning appropriate compensation for different skill levels, and adjusting the curriculums of library education organizations in Connecticut. The competencies cover the areas of General Competencies, Personal/Professional Competencies, Technology Competencies, Public Services Competencies, and Technical Services Competencies. The complete list is available on CLA's website at http://www.lib.uconn.edu/cla/new/class.html If there are any questions or comments about the competencies, please contact Kris Golden, C.L.A.S.S chair, at: 860456-1717 or e-mail kgolden@cslib.org.
