WEB-BASED LIBRARY TECHNOLOGY COURSES FOR SPRING 2002
Then consider taking a Web-based course from the University of Cincinnati's Raymond Walters College! RWC's Library/Media Services Department offers associate degrees and professional certificates in Library Technology to current and prospective library support staff members. It also seeks to provide continuing education opportunities for library staff members and librarians. Our courses are all offered for undergraduate credit only. You will learn using a Web-based course system that contains audio/slide lectures, class outlines, and links to resources on course topics along with an active class discussion board. Instructors are available via e-mail, chat, phone, and in-person (for local students) to assist you. Three courses will be offered during the Spring quarter, which runs from March 25 through June 6:
Cataloging II. (28-LBTN-142-701) 3 undergraduate credits
Provides students with extensive practice with cataloging actual materials, inputting records into OCLC, cataloging different types of materials (e.g. videos, government documents, electronic resources) and copy cataloging. Students will be introduced to other types of cataloging software and resources for managing library databases. Taught by Sharon Bressert, Manager of Technical Services for the University of Cincinnati Medical Center Libraries.
Reference Strategies & Instruction. (28-LBTN-144-701) 3 undergraduate credits
Students will learn how to conduct the reference interview and formulate strategies for answering user queries. Participation in real-life reference interactions is required. Successful tips on instructing users about particular tools or research methods will be conveyed. The Internet will be further discussed as a reference tool. Taught by John Burke, Systems/Public Services Librarian for the RWC Library.
Library Supervisory Skills. (28-LBTN-272-701) 3 undergraduate credits
The course teaches the fundamental management skills needed by library technicians. Covers how to train, motivate, counsel, and evaluate employees, time management, delegation of work, preparation of memos and statistical reports. Taught by Stephena Harmony, Director of the RWC Library.
Take advantage of our non-credit course option! While our courses are
available for academic credit at both in- and out-of-state rates, you may
find our non-credit course option affordable. You can participate in one
of our ten-week courses (without earning the credits) for just
$200. Contact John Burke directly if you are interested in this option.
