Subject: website reviews

Kendall, thanks. I accept!

>I'd also like to thank a regular contributor who I hope would like to consider himself an official member of the Associates crew
>because I know I do, and that's Michael Brooks who provides a website review for each issue. This issue he reviews the QVC
>website, which I know will please many of you! So, Michael, if you want the job of "official Associates website reviewer", the job
>is yours!

[Editors' Note: Great! Michael's review in this issue is about Mary Neiderlander's site. For those of you on Libsup-L, you know that Mary has just been chosen Poster of the Year. Congrats to Mary!]

To Kendall and all Associates e-journalists:

What a great web-based journal! I have been subscribed since '93, whether e-mail or web based, and I have always concluded each issue with a lighter step and a confirmation that what I do in our library is very important. It is most certainly not a "waste of time". Not by my standards.

I took a look at the back issue and Katie's editorial that caused some to un-subscribe. Frankly, I enjoy Katie's sense of humor. I remember when she was on Soaring to Excellence in one session (almost said episode--but doesn't Soaring feel that way? :-)) and it was great to put a face to a name. Her humor is refreshing; it comes from the heart; it's meant to give us all a feeling of 'yeah, we're all a part of the big library picture!'

When Katie moved to California, I was sad that she wouldn't be directly involved with Associates anymore. But wait! Katie continues to send her eclectic ravings from out West! I believe Katie is cool, and I hope to continue to read her editorials and contributions in future Associates issues. Keep up the great articles, and resources found on the web. I, for one, do appreciate all your hard work!

Sincerely, Willow Berntsen, Collins Library University of Puget Sound

[Editors' Note: Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!]

Subject: ASSOCIATES July issue

Kendall, Thanks for letting me send this to you.

I've recently finished reading the July issue of the ASSOCIATES. I make a copy, it's routed to several of my co-workers then put in our periodicals collection. I have enjoyed every publication. I have ASSOCIATES home page bookmarked so I have easy access to it. I shared Linda Putnam's column this month with my supervisor. We work in Technical Services. It should prove very useful. Thanks.

Shortly after the issue came out there was a notice on the Minnesota Soaring listserv concerning one of the columnists as being "one of our own". Carol Borzyskowski is from the Winona Public Library in Minnesota. This was exciting to see. I also happened at that time to be writing up the Support Staff and Paraprofessional Interest SectioN (SSPIN) annual report for the Minnesota Library Association (MLA) Board. I had the SSPIN roster out and discovered that Carol is a member of SSPIN. More excitement. One of our Section's goals reads, "Promote professional development and job opportunities through postings on the Support Staff and Paraprofessional Interest SectioN web site, LinkUp! (our newsletter), the MLA NewsLetter, and/or Internet-based discussion lists." I cited Carol and ASSOCIATES in our report under this goal (SSPIN's progress report on goals for 2000).

Thank you for the opportunity for everyone to be heard.

Marcia SSPIN Chair

P.S. You may use this in your next ASSOCIATES issue if you like.

[Editor's Note from Kendall: What I have been enjoying is that folk are now seeing ASSOCIATES - and us - as "real", if that makes any sense. Around here it used to be referred to as "that little newsletter", at which point I would explain quite clearly that it was NOT "a little newsletter". And when I would point out that we published regularly, never missed an issue date, and average between 50-60 pages an issue, I would watch librarians' jaws drop. Now when I mention ASSOCIATES, people know what I'm talking about...and not just here. I used to have to twist friends's arms to get last minute articles. For the last year, the submissions have just come in...and now that I've said that, I'll probably get nothing for the March issue. (Keep that in mind..."March issue...I must write something for the March issue..."). Some of you unfortunately may be in situations where nothing has improved, where you are still "just" a paraprofessional. But overall we're being taken more seriously. I like to think that ASSOCIATES has helped with that change in perception.]

Subject: Associates Archives

Dear Kendall, I must apologize! I was putting the recent issue of Associates on our web site, and noticed that we were not listed as an archive site. When I looked at our index (http://www.trinity.edu/departments/library/associat.html), I saw that the last three issues were not listed. I have a student that has been doing these for me, and she has not been linking to this page. I should have checked on this sooner. I know that we had discussed Trinity continuing to be an archive site, and you must have thought some terrible things about me. I am so sorry. The situation has been corrected, and I hope that you will include us in the next issue of Associates.

[Editors' Note: Thanks, Donna. Trinity is indeed listed again as an archive site. Much appreciated.]

Your journal indicates that if we want to promote a listserv to let you know. Our listserv was first created when the Soaring teleconferences began and was referred to as such. The scope of the use of the listserv has changed; and therefore, we have changed its name. We now refer to it as MNSSPIN.

Thanks for including this in your next ASSOCIATES issue.

Subject: The value of Associates

When you go to a conference, you never know who you might meet, and what you might learn. When you join a committee, you never know what the group may end up getting into. And when you pick up a book, or a newspaper, or get an electronic journal delivered right to your PC, you never know what article might come in handy.

Brad Eden's column in the issue of Associates sent out yesterday had a lengthly list of online resources dealing with telecommuting. As it happens, our Director for Cataloging is serving on a Library-wide committee on telecommuting. I lifted Brad's list and sent it to my director, making *sure* to say exactly how I had received this information. I just got a note back from the director, and he thanked me for sharing this information with him. He said he would put it in his growing folder of such information.

So thank you Brad, and thank you Associates. It's always nice to be able to share some good information with my director (there's nothing wrong with a brownie point or two!) and it's especially gratifying to share some information which *may* result in some nice options for my colleagues here at LC.

[Editors' Note: Couldn't resist. Thanks for the kind words, Gene!]
