Press Release

The Renaissance Library Calendar 2005 features three historic US libraries

Three American libraries appear in the 2005 edition of the Renaissance Library Calendar as being among the 12 most beautiful and historic libraries in the World.

They are the Library of the Boston Athenaeum, the St. Louis Public Library, and the Suzzallo Library at the University of Washington in Seattle.

The calendar also features the library from the historic birthplace of the Spanish language. The Monastic Library at Yuso, in the town of San Millan de la Cogolla in Rioja, Spain, dates from 1665. The monastery was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

The libraries have been selected from nominations by library and information professionals and book lovers in more than 40 countries. The calendar contains colour photographs of 12 wonderful old libraries, ranging in dates from 1611 to 1926.

Boston Athenaeum is one of the oldest independent libraries in the USA, having been founded in 1807. The building was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966.

The St. Louis Public Library was designed by renowned architect Cass Gilbert in the Beaux-Arts neo-Italian Renaissance style. Construction began in 1908 and the library opened in January 1912.

The Suzzallo Library, named after the University of Washington's 15th president, Henry Suzzallo, was opened in 1926. Its Reading Room, designed in the collegiate gothic style, contains a massive cathedral like vaulted ceiling.

The Renaissance Library Calendar is in its fifth year. The 2005 edition contains libraries from eight countries - Austria, Croatia, Malta, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the USA. It is published by ISIM of Stockholm, Sweden. Each photograph is accompanied by a well researched informative text about the history and collection of the library.
