Massachusetts
----------------------
Paraprofessional Section of the Massachusetts Library Association

This section was voted on and accepted by MLA in April 1994. It is comprised of support staff from both public and academic libraries. Currently, there are 100 members.

During the past few months, we have formed groups to discuss goals and objectives. Under discussion are such things as: who are paraprofessionals? (paralibrarians?); the importance of paraprofessionals to the operations of the library; communication between professionals and paraprofessionals; minimum standards; and continuing education.

The Program Committee is in the process of developing ideas for presentations to be held at the upcoming MLA Conference at the end of April 1995.

The Executive Committee consists of: Chair-Donna Bourrassa (Lawrence Law Library); Vice-Chair - Carolee Nielsen (Plymouth Public Library); Member-at-large - Denise Faucher (Worcester Public Library); and, Member-at-large - Cindy Monahan (Brookline Public).

The purpose of the Paraprofessional Section is: to provide a forum for discussion and programming to meet the multi-faceted needs of those paraprofessionals working in libraries; to maintain and enhance career awareness; to facilitate the exchange of information on recent developments in all areas of librarianship; and to respond to changes in accordance with the memberships’ wishes.

We are still fine-tuning our goals and objectives and have high aspirations for this group. Together, we hope to assist all library paraprofessionals in the state of Massachusetts in their careers by keeping them apprised of recent developments and offering them a chance to discuss problems and hopefully find solutions.

Our next meeting is tentatively scheduled for January at a time and place to be announced. In the meantime, any questions or suggestions may be directed to any of the members of the Executive Board. Please feel free to contact us. We look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting.

Tennessee

March 29-April 1, 1995
The Tennessee Library Association Annual Conference
Nashville Convention Center/Stouffer Hotel
Nashville, TN

The theme for this year’s conference is “Information, Innovation, Inspiration”. TLA’s Paraprofessional Roundtable will sponsor five programs this year on various topics of interest to support staff. They are as follows:

Thursday March 30th
9:30 - 11:30 CST     “How To Effectively Handle Difficult Situations in the Public Service Area”. Sandra Nelson from the Tennessee State Library and Archives will discuss various ways to effectively deal with difficult patrons and attitudes while working in public service areas of the library.

10:30 - 12:00 CST    “Introducing the Web-Internet Resources for Paraprofessionals and Professionals”. Anne Booker from the University of Tennessee’s John C. Hodges Library will give a presentation of resources available on the internet for paraprofessionals. She will discuss the various ways to purchase connect time and introduce the World Wide Web.

2:00 - 3:30 CST    “The Benefits of Consortium Purchasing”. The Tennessee Board of Regents’ Media Consortium enables member institutions to acquire on a cooperative basis media products including films, audio and/or video tapes, and other nonprint materials. Sue Loper and Aretha Whitaker will discuss the history of the consortium and the services available to its members.

Friday March 31st
9:30 - 11:30 CST    “Graduate Education Programs Offered By the University of Tennessee’s School of Information Sciences”. Kristy Atwood, a senior research assistant for Dr. José-Marie Griffiths at the UT School of Information Sciences, will discuss the new curriculum that has been developed and possible opportunities available with a degree. She will also discuss the school’s plans for distance learning programs throughout the state.

1:30 - 3:30 CST    “Annual Meeting of the Paraprofessional Roundtable featuring Paulette Feld from the Wisconsin Library Association’s Support Staff Section”. Until recently, support staffs had little opportunity to share experiences with their colleagues at other libraries and locations. That has all changed with support staff across the country getting involved in local, state, and national organizations. There are many benefits to becoming involved in these organizations including those that can improve performance and attitude on the job. This presentation will look at where we have come as support staff and where we want to be in the future. Immediately after our speaker, we will have our annual business meeting.
