Soaring to Excellence
February 14, 1997; March 14, 1997; April 11, 1997

Topics for this year's Soaring to Excellence teleconference are
based on feedback from more than 10,000 library support staff who
participated in Soaring to Excellence over the last two years.

You and the Internet
Friday, February 14, 1997
12 p.m. to 3 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time)
This teleconference will cover the basic use, design and
terminology of the Internet. It will also focus on training for
you and the library user, access to the Internet, using mental
models to better understand the Internet, and using the Internet
in reference and searches.

The presenter:
D. Scott Brandt, a.k.a. Techman, is an assistant professor of
library and information service at Purdue University. In addition
to training, teaching and doing research, Scott Brandt is a
nationally known presenter of workshops that apply new models of
learning to training on Internet-related topics. He is one of the
organizers of the annual Computers in Libraries conference.

You and Technical Services
Friday, March 14, 1997
12 p.m. to 3 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time)
This teleconference will explain technical services directed to
library staffers who work in technical services as well as those
who work in other areas of the library. We'll look at
qualifications for working in technical services, possible jobs
for LTA's and time management. We'll highlight communications and
serving the internal client and you'll improve your skills at
teamwork between the technical services department and the public
services department. We'll also take a look at technical services
issues now and in the future.

The presenter:
Debra Wilcox Johnson teaches, writes, and consults in the areas
of management, personnel issues, technical services, library
issues, and training of each category of library worker. Dr.
Johnson works with libraries of every type and size throughout
the United States. Both her practical approach to library issues
and her ability to involve participants make her an ideal
teleconference participant. Deb Johnson's combination of
useful information and humor will create a relaxed and
information-packed training experience. You'll discover what
makes a quality workplace and excellent customer service.

You and Your Job: Body, Mind and Spirit
Friday, April 11, 1997

worldwide system of information which is basic to human culture:
the library. Learn the latest on ergonomics and environment in
the library. Update your people skills by learning about conflict
management, assertiveness vs. aggressiveness and gender
differences in communication. Finally, find out how you can soar
in the global world by increasing your self-esteem and body
image.

The presenters:
To be announced

Soaring to Excellence is a teleconference designed especially for
training library assistants. The content of Soaring to
Excellence is a balance between technical issues and workplace
issues. It is innovative, practical and it is a milestone in the
history of library paraprofessionals, who form 62% of library
employees. The program is produced by the College of DuPage
under the direction of Linda Slusar, the coordinator of the
Library Technical Assistant program at COD. Previous Soaring to
Excellence teleconferences have reached over 10,000 people at 420
sites in the U.S., Canada and the Virgin Islands. Participants
have included the Library of Congress, Harvard University and
