*LETTERS TO THE EDITORS* From: John K. TuckerDate: Thu, Dec 18, 1997 9:56 AM Subject: ASSOCIATES Subscribing I have tried a couple of times to subscribe to ASSOCIATES with no luck. The latest address and message I have are: LISTSERV@UKANVM.CC.UKANS.EDU SUB ASSOC-L your name The system reponded that ASSOC-L was unknown there. Any alternative addresses? [Editors note: As was reported in the last issue of _ASSOCIATES: The Electronic Library Support Staff Journal_, we have moved to a new server. The new address is LISTPROC@UKANS.EDU. Complete subscription information is provided under Archive, Gopher, FTP and WWW Retrieval Information. Of course, this doesn't help new subscribers :-) But we have added...and welcome to... John] ********** From: Jan Turner Date: Wed, 21 Jan 1998 16:56:13 Subject: New server Thanks for the info re the new server. I'm not that technically inclined....do I need to do anything to in order to continue receiving Associates if I'm already subscribed? Really enjoy your issues up here in chilly (this time of the year, anyway) Nova Scotia, Canada! [Thanks for the kind words! And, nope, nothing was needed on the part of existing subscribers.] ********** From: Liz Bayley Date: Tue, 17 Mar 1998 11:16:26 Subject: Re: Test 2 and correction Just to let you know that I have unsubscribed under my "real" name and have resubscribed under my gopher pseudonym. It's a great journal, which I mount for all of our staff to read. [We're always pleased to hear of subscribers who share _ASSOCIATES_ with their colleagues.] ********** From: Richard Davidon Date: Mon, 16 Mar 1998 11:38:48 Subject: possible website Why not just put Associates on a web site? You won't have to send a copy to everybody on the list. Your readers could go to the site for the latest edition. Wouldn't this simplify things for everyone? [See next letter.] ********** From: Rebecca Terhaar Date: Tue, 17 Mar 1998 11:27:38 Subject: Unsubscribe from Associates Please unsubscribe me from Associates. Your publication has published some interesting articles, and I appreciate the fact that it is targeted for library support staff. The content is fine, it's the format I object to. While I use computers everyday, it is generally for technical or email purposes. I have been a subscriber to Associates for quite some time, from its beginning I think, trying to adjust to the electronic format. I find that I much prefer a format in which I can scan an article (headlines, subtitles, pictures, inset boxes) before committing to reading the entire thing. My time is limited (whose isn't?), and many times I just end up deleting an article based on its title alone. I would be much more likely to subscribe to your journal if it had some descriptive additions such as the above. Thanks for the opportunity to read your publication, and good luck! [While we're always sorry to lose subscribers, we have some exciting plans for the future thanks to the very impressive work of Joy Wanden, one of our editors. Stay tuned for future developments!] ********** From: Gene Kinnaly Date: Wed, Mar 11, 1998 8:20 AM Subject: quick question Can _Associates_ articles be reprinted in print journals? I've been asked if an article of mine could appear in a state library association's journal. I don't have any problem with it - is it OK with _Associates_? [Yes, authors most certainly may allow their _ASSOCIATES_ articles to be reprinted in print journals. Copyright for articles originally published in _ASSOCIATES_ remains with the author. We retain the right of electronic publication including the right of our readers to download and print off issues of _ASSOCIATES_ and to make copies of our journal available to readers. We do require that any reprint acknowledges that the article was first published electronically in _ASSOCIATES: The Electronic Library Support Staff Journal_...and we always appreciate being asked.] ********** From: Barbara Pepper-Rotness Subject: Associates copyright Date: Mon, 16 Mar 1998 13:42:45 I have been subscribing to your online magazine "Associates" for about a year and a half and I would like to know what copyright laws pertain to this format. I work at the Montana State Library and our collection consists of Library Science materials, both professional and paraprofessional. If we wanted to add this magazine to our collection, could we download the issues, print and secure them in binders and place them on our shelves, without infringing on copyright laws? Thanks for your help in this matter. [See the previous letter for copyright issues. One point we should make is that any reader wishing to reprint an _ASSOCIATES_ article elsewhere first needs permission of the author. This is not the same thing as printing off a hard copy of _ASSOCIATES_.] ********** [And then, of course, there were many letters from the "Call for Submissions Spam" which, as many of you know by now, was caused by problems with a server in Australia. A few unattributed samples follow...and we really appreciate the patience and understanding of almost all of you...] "I have now received 12 copies of this same message. I was so impressed I submitted something, and it was accepted. I will even try another piece. I appreciate your enthusiasm, but would you check my settings? I don't need this much encouragement." "This is really becoming annoying. I'm going to start forwarding all this junk to you. :-(" "I think your server is becoming a broken record; I have received over a dozen copies of the Call for Submissions today. Maybe your computer system needs a vacation ;-)" " hi, no offense taken, please fix mail bomb" ***************************** Please send letters to the editor to associat@raven.cc.ukans.edu
