Deborah Carver, OLA President
Keynote Address: “The Constitutional Mission of the Library and Support Staff”
Candace Morgan, Chair, American Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom Committee

SESSION I (10:00 - 11:00 am)

INTERNET, LIBRARIES AND FIRST AMENDMENT FREEDOMS (PART I)
Candace Morgan, Deputy Director of Fort Vancouver Regional Library, will discuss the following topics: What is the status of First Amendment freedoms on the Internet? What should be the library’s role in providing public Internet access? How can we apply First Amendment principles to practical management of Internet access? How do support staff fit in? There will be time for questions and answers.

NETWORKING TO GET THINGS DONE
Learn from a “pro” what networking really means. What is networking? Why is it beneficial? How and when to use it. When might networking be inappropriate? Deborah Jacobs, Director of the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, will begin with practical steps you can use to network; whether it be with your peers, librarians, or library directors.

COOL WEB SITES
Barbara Valentine, Reference and Systems Librarian at Northrop Library, Linfield College, explores World Wide Web sites selected for their wide appeal and usefulness. These sites are relatively stable, have identified authority, and provide either substantive information or links to key sources.

SPINE MANIPULATION
Meet a book doctor who specializes in spinal injuries. Donetta Sheffold, former Manager of the Materials Preparation Unit of Oregon State University, will discuss and answer basic questions on book mending. She will demonstrate procedures on spine repair; tipping in single and multi-signatures; and mending corners, pages, and paperbacks.

SESSION II (11:15 am - 12:15 pm)

INTERNET, LIBRARIES AND FIRST AMENDMENT FREEDOMS (PART II)
Candace Morgan continues this workshop.

A MODEL FOR LEADERSHIP: VALUES, VISION, AND VOICE
A motivational, thought-provoking examination of leadership. Dave Hansen, Dean of Students, Linfield College, will concentrate on three critical leadership characteristics: values, voice, and vision.

BEYOND GOOSEBUMPS AND R.L. STINE: READER’S ADVISORY SERVICE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS
A lively discussion of elements of Reader’s Advisory Service for children and young adults. Naomi Angier and Phil Talbot, Youth Services staff members at the Multnomah County Library System, will discuss conducting a reference interview, matching young readers’ interests with books in your collection, and popular authors and series for children and young adults.

MULTI-CULTURAL OUTREACH: SERVING PATRONS WHO DON’T SPEAK ENGLISH
Rosalie Grafe, Supervisor, Holgate Branch, Multnomah County Library System, has been learning to serve sizeable new populations of immigrants in the Holgate service area since 1990. Front-line staff have helped identify these groups and have assisted in selection of materials their patrons would like to see in the branch collection. In 1992, Holgate Branch had an “International Heritage Day” celebration and have sponsored other outreach programs since.

LUNCHEON SPEAKER (12:30 - 1:45 pm)

MANAGING AGITATED PERSONS (PART I)
Dan Kamada, Director of Acute Care In-Patient Psychiatry at Oregon Health Services, will focus on verbal intervention in dealing with upset people. Techniques used to reduce behaviors of escalating violence and role playing demos will be presented.

THE WEB OR THE NET?
Many people think of the World Wide Web as being all there is to the Internet. This may cause them to overlook important resources available through the older more traditional networks. James Price, Techno-Mentor, and Patrick Blane, Stack Service Manager, both of Multnomah County Library System, will show why it is important to include the older methodologies in searching.

ACCESSING MATERIALS BY SUBJECT: SUBJECT HEADINGS AND KEYWORDS
Felicia Uhden, Catalog Librarian at Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, provides an introduction to major concepts in subject heading assignments, discussion of online catalogs and subject retrieval and an overview of popular subject heading lists. SESSION IV (3:15 - 4:15 pm)

MANAGING AGITATED PERSONS (PART II)
Dan Kamada continues the workshop.

Anna Beauchamp, Interlibrary Loan Coordinator, Southern Oregon State College Library, will guide us through a non-technical approach to the use of Web page forms in Interlibrary Loan. Topics include: integrating Web forms into standard ILL routines, developing forms based on your current paper forms, how to communicate with programmers if you aren’t writing the code yourself; impacts on volume, copyright compliance, implications of bypassing the reference interview.
