This teleconference will provide libraries and their governing institutions with an analysis of the implications of the recent anti-terrorism measures. This will include identifying steps that institutions need to take to comply with proper search warrants, subpoenas, and wiretap requests from law enforcement. Panelists will address the key legal issues and policy implications for libraries and address the impact of any legislative and regulatory proposals on the privacy and First Amendment rights of library users. A Congress focused on library support staff and to give a voice to the three main issues indicated in the Library Support Staff Interests Round Table survey in 1997: career ladders, compensation, and continuing education and training. Also, a fourth issue to be addressed is the shortage of library staff members, including the recruitment of library support staff members and their changing roles due to the shortage of librarians.

Cindy Ahrens, Library Journal's 2002 Paraprofessional of the Year, and Cindy Mielke, Library Mosaic's 2002 Paraprofessional of the Year will keynote the upcoming Branch Out Conference. Cindy Ahrens, Administrative Assistant to the Director of Hennepin County Libraries is featured in Library Journal, March 1, 2002, and Cindy Mielke, a library associate in acquisitions at Briggs Library, South Dakota State University, appeared in the May/June 2002 issue of Library Mosaics. The title of their presentation will be "Where have I been and how did I get "Here"! A conference web site is currently under construction so check the URL for updated information.

With the theme of "Bridging services - embracing reality", the main objective of the Conference is to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas relating to the Library and Information Industry, while bringing current issues and "Customer Service" to the forefront.

The conference will also provide an opportunity for you to explore the latest resources and tools of the profession at the trade exhibit.
