Heidi Jensen
Library Assistant
Pioneer Library System
Canandaigua, NY

The 2012 New York State Library Assistants’ Association annual conference took place June 6 – 8th, in breathtaking Niagara Falls, New York. The conference was held at the Seneca Niagara Casino and Hotel located just a few blocks from the scenic historic Horseshoe Niagara Falls.

On Wednesday, June 6th, the conference started by offering three different tours of local attractions. Attendees had the opportunity to enjoy a ride on the ‘Maid of the Mist’ boat tour, which takes passengers as close to the falls as you can safely get, a walking tour of ‘Cave of Winds‘, or a walking tour of Lewiston, where actors dressed up in period clothing while giving attendees local history of the area. Wednesday evening closed with a light bite mixer and a performance by magician, Michael Seege at the conference hotel.

Thursday, June 7th started early with welcoming speeches, a wonderful hot buffet breakfast, conference meeting and reports and then onto the first of four workshops for the conference. For each of the four workshop sessions, 6 different workshops were available as choices. The workshops ranged from local history, computer technology, grant writing, cataloging to reference and many more. Thursday evening a dinner was hosted at the ‘Top of the Falls’ restaurant located on Goat Island just above the Horseshoe Falls. Dinner was good but the networking time with other library assistants was excellent! It’s great to meet new people and to visit with friends you have known for years.

Friday, June 8th, the last day of the conference offered two more workshops and an amazing lunch. We were treated to the keynote presentation by author Patty Gelman. Ms. Gelman wrote the book, ‘Humor After the Tumor, One Woman’s Look at Her Year with Breast Cancer’. It was a very uplifting and motiving look at women’s health and humor.

The New York State Library Assistants’ Association conference is held in different locations within New York State. The 2013 conference is being planned for Lake Placid, New York, June 12-14.
