Registration is open for the Ohio Library Council’s 2008 Supportive Staff Conference on September 24-25 in Columbus. Keynote speaker Robin Elston of Elston Consulting will discuss “Maintaining a Positive Outlook in the Midst of Change.” Kay Frances, motivational humorist and stress management specialist, will wrap up the conference by encouraging attendees to “Take the (Support Staff) Road Less Stressed.”

Other speakers at the conference include Laura Solomon of OPLIN; Cindi Trainor, Coordinator of Library Technology at Eastern Kentucky University; Cathy Wilkymacky of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County; Dr. Arthur Jipson, Director of the University of Dayton’s Criminal Justice Program; and Jay Burton from the State Library of Ohio.

Breakout sessions will cover many topics to help supportive staff cultivate new skills and deal with the many changes affecting public libraries today including: 

  • Technology (e.g., gadgets, Internet search basics, social networking)
  • Security issues for staff and patrons
  • Intellectual freedom
  • Internet privacy
  • Peer training
  • ALA certification
  • Career and personal achievement
