Letters To The Editor

Subject: Job exchanges

Just finished reading the latest issue of Associates. I'm particularly interested in the feature article by Samuel R. Brown titled "Job Exchanges and Mentoring for Library Support Staff." Hoping I can copy it & share it with some of my colleagues.

This very topic came up in discussion at the Technical Services Section business meeting at the Minnesota Library Association annual conference in September. The current chair, soon to be past chair, of the section was going to work on this issue based on our interest.

I would like to send a copy of the article to her with your permission.

Thanks,

Marcia

[Editor: Please feel free to copy the article by Samuel R. Brown titled "Job Exchanges and Mentoring for Library Support Staff." I request that you give credit to Samuel Brown and to Associates (Nov. 2002, v.9, no.2). I found the information extremely interesting myself.]

Poor baby, you're just so naive. When I worked for Broward County Libraries anyone who didn't want to pay a fine basically just had to say so to get the fine waved. The administrators of BCL obviously believe that public relations are more important. I believed otherwise the reason being that I kept seeing the same faces over and over again with the same lame excuses. Yep, we enabled them the lazy @#$%$#.

But when you're a small cog in a big wheel the most important thing to do is reduce stress... for yourself!

Good luck. I enjoyed your column.

Subject: Job titles for library assistants

Wendee,

Would you mind asking the readers of Associates to collect titles for their jobs. Library assistant, technician, etc. … There is a debate going on here at the moment saying if we integrate our workforce, what are we going to call the new "workers." They can not all be librarians, or information officers, so we want to have something new and descriptive.

But what??

Thanks so much.

Jim

[Editor: I know this subject comes up frequently on listservs and discussion boards devoted to library staff. Do any readers have lists of job titles to share with Jim? Please contact him directly. Perhaps Jim could share this information in the next Associates?]

Subject: feedback

Hi Sylvia,

I just read your Editorial in the November issue of Associates. It reminded me of your other pieces which I have read and I realized it's time to tell YOU how much I enjoy them. I have been working at the Law Library here for going-on 11 years and can certainly relate to your observations. There's nothing wrong with being old fashioned and bookish (which I am), but I do my best to 'update' the image of pokey librarians (and library assistants). I like to compete in Squash tournaments, listen to live music, and to party with equal relish. Complicated says it best!

Thanks for writing and keep writing! from a fellow Canadian.

Elizabeth Teskey
