Subject: Question about article submission for Associates

Dear Ms. Eyler,

When articles are submitted, what does accepting them "gratis" refer to? As soon as I am finished working on one, I would like to submit something about ordering monographs for an academic library.

Editor: I'm happy to hear that you are considering submitting an article to Associates. Associates does not pay the author for the article ("gratis"). The author continues to hold the rights to the article. If the article is republished in another publication, then Associates would appreciate if that fact were mentioned. Also, if an article has already been published in another publication, then that fact must be mentioned in the Associates article as well.

Subject: Citing Associates

I recently subscribed to ASSOCIATESWEB after looking over some archived issues.

Our seven county northcentral Wisconsin library system (offices in Wausau, WI) produces a monthly online newsletter, the LAMPLIGHTER, in which we include some original articles and a number of whole or edited articles from lots of other library publications ... see http://wvls.lib.wi.us/Newsletter/newsindex.htm

How does one go about getting permission to use material from Associates? Of course, being good librarians, we always give credit where it is due. By the way, if you would like to 'borrow' from our LAMPLIGHTER, feel free to do so (with appropriate credit being given of course).

Please advise.

Editor: I enjoyed looking at your online newsletter. You may use articles from Associates simply by giving credit to the author and Associates. We would appreciate if you would either write the author (usually the email address is with the article) or to me, and I'll contact the author. We rarely have restrictions--and you'll usually get a speedy response. We do appreciate if a statement such as: "Reprinted with permission from Associates (2004, March, v. 10, no. 3)" or "Reprinted with permission from the author" is given.

[Editor's note: While searching the web recently, I found several articles from Associates that were linked to other sources or as stand-alone sites. All Associates articles will now contain a reference to the Associates source, giving the volume and date information, as well as the website--as shown on this page in the upper right corner.]

Subject: Subscription page Associates

Hi Wendee. I passed on the news to our classified staff today that the new Associates was available. When one of the ladies looked at the subscription page, she noticed that "separately" in the first line after SUBSCRIBE is spelled incorrectly as "seperately." She asked me to pass this on.

Editor: Your email got a chuckle out of me! I've been obsessed with typos in online catalogs and here I should have been obsessed with typos in Associates. I could use your co-worker on our editorial staff and in my cataloging department to seek out and correct typos! There is nothing I can do now about the email version of Associates, but the web page version has been corrected. Please thank her for me.
