Letters To The Editor

The editor received the following in response to Katie Buller Kintner’s column Library Life: A Column Of Eclectic Rantings about filtering software to screen out offensive terminology/pictures in the last issue of ASSOCIATES (July 2003 v. 10, no. 1).

Date: Mon, 28 Jul 2003
From: Emilie Quast <e-quas@tc.umn.edu>
Subject: filter fodder

Good people! Minnesota is not only the home of Fertile (town) but also the city of Climax. Feed your filters that piece of fodder.

The editor received the following response from about 10 different PostMasters when attempting to send out both email versions and notification of ASSOCIATES through the subscriber listserv. Apparently the mailings had been read by filtering software, rejected, and returned to me.

Date: Mon, 28 Jul 2003
To: rivwe@citrus.ucr.edu
Subject: list ASSOCIATES: Mail Error Notification

The following message was sent to the error address (owner-associates@listserv.ucr.edu) for the ASSOCIATES list.

The text of the message follows:
---------------------------------------------------
Subject: Returned mail, possible virus found

The following truncated email is being returned because our systems have determined that it may possibly contain a virus. Another possibility is that someone else is infected with a virus, and they are forging your email address

This is the editor, again. If subscribers do not receive pieces of the email version of ASSOCIATES, or notification that the website is updated, please let me know. I found that most subscribers did not receive the email regarding Subscribing/Unsubscribing to ASSOCIATES. I will attempt to email the Subscribing/Unsubscribing information in this issue with the ASSOCIATES Title Page. If it is filtered out again, I’ll need some advice on how to override the filtering software!

In ASSOCIATES (July 2003, vol. 10, no. 1), I asked in my From the Editor column if ASSOCIATES should include advertisements and/or press releases of library-related products for sale. These are the responses:

From: "Edward Gillen" <EGILLEN@mail.nysed.gov>
Subject: Advertising in ASSOCIATES

Hi Wendee,

Accepting advertisements means having an advertisement policy ... you would not want to promote hate organization materials for example. If accepting advertisements, would there be monies exchanged and for what purpose? If there is no need for the revenue, I would say don't accept advertisements.

If however, you do go the advertisement route ... since I receive "sections" of ASSOCIATES via e-mail it would up to me to read or delete an "Advertisements" section. So, I would say if this were the format, go ahead. If on website, still my choice to choose link.

My two cents ... glad you're back and hope you are feeling well. Take care, Ed

NO ads.

Ads are included in publications as a source of revenue or to alert readers to an exceptional product. If you don't need the revenue and are not endorsing the product, what is the point of carrying the ad? nope.

Wendee,

In response to the question about advertising in the online ASSOCIATES issue, I would vote "no". The only time I would agree that this is a good idea is if we had to do it for revenue in order to keep the publication alive.

My first preference would be no ads at all.

Second choice: ads on website but not via e-mail.

Third choice: if ads sent out via e-mail, have them all in one message (clearly labelled as such) so I can delete them all at once.

Thanks!

Subject: RE: ASSOCIATES Advertising preferences

Wendee,

There are so many other resources for advertising - I don't really see the point of including advertising in ASSOCIATES at all. If there is a strong contingent advocating adding ads, my preferences would then be:

Website - an optional link off the main page would do the trick (PLEASE NO POPUPS!)
Email - ads collected together into one separate e-mail (which I can easily delete if I'm not in the mood...)

Thanks for soliciting our opinions.

Pat

Pat also made these comments in a follow-up email:

The mention of specific brand names/products in a "feature" works because it is usually someone describing their experience actually using it - as opposed to the (often erroneous) advertising claims by a vendor (yes I'm a bit cynical from our last two ILS purchases...).

Feel free to use my remarks as long as it is clear that these are my personal opinions and I make no claim to represent the views of National University.

Hi!

Regarding your letter to the readers, I think advertisements/press releases as a link is a good idea, but as the old addage goes: Everything in moderation. Stick with some sort of selection criteria so you are not inundated with adverts. My humble opinion. =)

Cheers, MD

Carole Covington sent a follow-up email regarding her article A View From the Rungs: Confessions Of a Career Ladder Climber, in ASSOCIATES (July 2003 v. 10, no. 1). I'm pleased to learn that others thought her article was informative and valuable.

Date: Mon, 04 Aug 2003
From: "Carole Covington" <COVINCA@groupwise1.duc.auburn.edu>
Subject: thanks

Dear Ms. Eyler:

Thanks for giving my career ladder article space in the July 2003 issue of ASSOCIATES. I've received an appreciative message from a library staff person who is passing it on to her dean; hopefully your printing it will encourage a few other paraprofessionals to explore development of career ladders at their institutions. Thanks again for ASSOCIATES and its outreach.

Sincerely,
Carole

In Letters to the Editor, ASSOCIATES (July 2003 v. 10, no. 1), Rose had questions about new patron registration and asked if ASSOCIATES had a listserv to send questions out to the membership. I published Rose’s letter and asked the subscribers to assist Rose. (ASSOCIATES doesn't have a question/answer board and does not allow anyone to use the subscriber list to post messages to subscribers.)

Rose (and Wendee) –

You might like to subscribe to the CircPlus mailing list. You could also check the archives for that list because I believe there has been discussion about online registration before. I believe that the following information is still accurate. Let me know if you have trouble subscribing or checking the archives.

TO SUBSCRIBE:

Send e-mail to: listserv@listserv.idbsu.edu

Compose the message as follows - this is known as the "listserv command" format. Leave the subject line blank. In the body of the message type nothing but: subscribe CIRCPLUS

Then send it. You will then receive an email back asking for you to confirm your subscription.
